Taqueria Rios sits quietly on N Raul Longoria Rd in San Juan, offering a straightforward take on classic Mexican street food in a modest, newly renovated space. If you’re after an informal meal focused on tacos, baked potatoes topped with beef, and some weekend menudo, this spot fits the bill without fuss.

The atmosphere here leans casual and busy, especially on weekend afternoons when locals stop by for a quick, satisfying bite. Seating isn’t expansive, and parking can fill up quickly, reflecting how this place is more about grabbing good eats than lingering over drinks or fancy presentations. The building’s upgrade from its earlier, simpler days means you dine in a cleaner, air-conditioned room now, which makes a marked difference during those hot Texas days.

Taqueria Rios is best known for its Mexican street-style tacos served on either corn or flour tortillas, often loaded with options like bistek or tripas dorado. The quality of meat tends to stand out here — forks slice through tender cuts without surprises of sinew or excess fat. The complementary frijoles charros served right after you sit add a homely touch to the experience, hinting at the kitchen’s focus on straightforward, comforting flavors.

Menu highlights like the Taco Combo De Bistec and the substantial baked potato with beef make for filling meals that nudge just under $7, keeping the price point approachable for everyday dining. For those catching a weekend visit, the menudo offers a traditional touch, warming up the crowd on cooler days.

The drink selection sticks mostly to aguas frescas, canned beverages, and Mexican bottled sodas — no alcoholic options — which pairs well with the no-frills vibe. It’s a spot that feels grounded by the local community’s rhythms: early lunches, weekend visits, and quick dinners after a day running errands or heading home.

Expect a friendly but efficient staff who manage the flow well, even when the dining room starts to buzz with the Sunday crowd. Overall, this taqueria delivers a slice of South Texas flavor without pretense, making it a practical stop for those who want honest ingredients and a familiar, unpolished setting.

I used to come here years and years ago when it was a small building with no AC. I saw it on the map and thought I'd come back and try it again. The building is now renovated. You are quickly greeted with frijoles charros as soon as you sit down. I had the combo of bistek on maiz of course--con todo. The meat quality was great and I didn't get any sinew, fat or cartilage in my tacos like you might get at other places. The tortillas weren't soaked in oil so I felt a tiny bit better about eating it. I'll be back!

Small variety of drinks. Complementary cup of beans with order. Ordered the small baked potato topped with beefsteak for less $6.00. The potato was well done. Soft, moist, buttery, bacony, sour creamy….. It was so good that I ate the skin. I was surprised. Thanks Taqueria Rios.

Our last stop in McAllen before departing and it didn’t let us down. It was Sunday afternoon so this place was boomin! We got sat but it didn’t take a long time for us to get greeted and taken care of. But once she did come, we got things rolling. Hubby and I once again got a handful of tacos and he decided to try one with “sweet bread.” Didn’t enjoy that one, the texture was too mushy and not pleasant. But the rest tasted good. The beans/pork cup they gave us had a good flavor but there were just big chunks of pork fat in them so we didn’t really eat those. My friend got something popular in the area called “sincronizada” and it was like this giant burrito. We all helped each other eat it and devoured the rest of the tacos. Very reasonably priced and a good end to our trip!

I ordered a combo of corn tortilla and tripa. The tripa was perfect and crispy. The beans were a disappointment. They were missing flavor.

The food is pretty good. I wouldn’t say that flavor wise it is my top 3 BUT Taqueria Rios continues to offer what many places don’t anymore - taco combos at reasonable price. Tacos papa beans and a soda The papa is buttery and cheesy! It can get a little crowded but nothing too crazy! I’ve been here a few times.
